For Jazzleen Amador, Los Medanos College provided the perfect combination of classes, inspirational instructors and meaningful work-study opportunities to prepare her for transferring to UC Davis this fall.
“For me, the most valuable thing at LMC are the instructors, especially in the Art Department,” said Amador, a graphic communication major.
Amador said she had always been a talented artist, but graphic design was a new area for her. She recalled one night she was struggling with a graphic art assignment. Out of frustration she sent a late-night email to her instructor, and he replied right away.
“He said keep going! And that was what I needed. It didn’t matter how much I struggled, the instructors kept pushing me to stay with it,” she said. Amador soon learned to take advantage instructors’ office hours, which was how she found out about a work-study opportunity in the Art Department.
“As a student worker over the summer, I had a chance to participate in filming a TV commercial for the college on Telemundo, I created graphic designs for the college Instagram, a video to help students know how to pick up art supplies,” she said. “Being here prepared me more for heading to UC Davis than if I had gone straight from high school.”
Ken Alexander, Art Department co-chair, said instructors encourage students to explore opportunities to use their new skills in the real world.
“We treat students as professionals with high expectations,” he said. “We take art and design very seriously, but we also have a lot of fun and tackle challenges with humor.”
